(1) What was the significance of the conflict between Philip IV and Boniface VIII?
The conflitct between King Philip IV and Boniface VIII started when King Philip of France sought to tax the clergy to fund military operations. Pope Boniface stronly opposed this, issuing papal bills, most notably Unam Sancatam which asserted that spiritual power held supreme authority over all secular rulers. The conflict continued when Philip rejected papal supremacy, sending forces to arrest the pope. Though the pope was quickly rescued, he died shortly after from the trauma, signaling a victory for royal power.

(3) Based on the video and on your reading, what were the effects on Europe of the Black Death?
The effects of Black Death on Europe were devastating, killing up to 60% of the entire population, leading to severe depopulation across urban and rural regions. With a vast decrease in the workforce, surviving peasants gained significant bargaining power, as able workers were rare. The peasants demanded higher wages and lower rents. The traditional feudal system weakened as land values dropped and peasants gained mobility.
