Based on the video lessons and your reading, what were the reasons behind the conflicts between the emperors and the popes during this period?
A major reason behind the conflict was papal supremacy. Popes claimed absolute authority over both spiritual and temporal affairs. They argued that because spiritual salvation is superior to earthly existence, kings and emporors must be subordinate to the pope, who held the power to crown or depose secular rulers. Another reason is the papacy ruled central italy as a territorial kingdom. Any attempt by the holy roman empire to consolidate power in Italy was viewed by popes as a direct threat to the papal state’s sovereignty. Because church officials held vast lands, collected taxes, and commanded feudal armies, controlling ecclesiastical appointments meant controlling immense wealth and political power.
